Nichols Hardware Store
Nichols Hardware Store, a popular spot in downtown Lyme, New Hampshire, is closing its doors this April after 61 years; it will certainly be missed. When I was a kid, Guy Nichols sold nuts, bolts and pliers while his wife, Ester, made the best donuts I have ever eaten. Muriel's are good, but Ester's were better! Now Guy's sons and grandson are selling out so they can spend more time selling wood, pellet, and corn heating systems engineered by TARM.
It is not just the history of buildings that can be intertwined, but also the lives of people. When I prepared this profile, I didn't know how my website was connected to the early days of Nichols Hardware. Jane Mason is a friend, writer, and website designer. When I made the decision to develop a website so neighbors, friends, and family could know how the wind was blowing on Acorn Hill Farm, I asked Jane if she could develop it for me through her business, Grover Graphics. At the time I had a vague recollection that Jane had lived in Lyme many years ago. After she read my April 6th profile, she told me that Nichols Hardware Store was where her mother worked as their bookkeeper, and the store was the subject of her first "published work." As a third-grade student in Lyme Elementary School, she wrote a poem about Nichols Hardware. When Jane's mother showed the poem to Guy Nichols, he was so impressed he asked Jane to read her poem for one of his radio ads on WDCR. This is the poem, exactly as written in January, 1970:
